Twelfth Night
Playwright: William Shakespeare
Director: Dee Dee Batteast
Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies, weaving a tale of mistaken identities, unrequited love, and the folly of ambition. Set in the enchanting land of Illyria, the play follows Viola, who disguises herself as a man after being shipwrecked, only to find herself entangled in a love triangle involving the noble Duke Orsino and the grieving Lady Olivia. With its witty dialogue, memorable characters, and themes of love and self-discovery, *Twelfth Night* continues to captivate audiences with its timeless charm and humor.
Set loosely in the 1920s, the production embraced a stylish aesthetic that felt modern rather than “old.” The design created the illusion of being behind a cinema screen, drawing inspiration from the 1923 silent film *Salome*. This film was chosen by the director for its striking visual style, and the production’s visual elements were designed simultaneously with the sound to create a cohesive and immersive experience.
