Marcus is sixteen and "sweet." Days before a massive storm strikes the projects of Louisiana, the currents of his life converge, overflowing into his close-knit community and launching the search for his sexual and personal identity on a cultural landscape infused with mysterious family creeds. The provocative, poignant, and fiercely humorous coming-of-age story of a young gay man in the South, MARCUS is the stirring conclusion of The Brother/Sister Plays.
Our production of Marcus was built with a central focus of storytelling in a community, both in the world of the play and the local community of our production. We endeavored to not only create a family of the characters onstage, but to invite the audience to join that family. Music became an important part of communicating that inter-connectivity, with their group use of music and dance signifying their connection with each other. The majority of sound reinforcement came from rear of stage speakers aimed through the projection surfaces to avoid a 'wall of sound' that would divide the proscenium stage from the audience. Instead of a divding line, the world of the play and the audience would blend together, encouraged to live as one.
